Summer Windchime Spell

Hello, hello, my loves!

Today I wanted to share a new spell with you for enchanting windchimes to hang outside your home. The idea to share this practice I’ve done for years with you all came to me after we bought a new windchime for our front steps, since the last two had gotten beaten up by the weather and finally fell apart beyond repair.

Using windchimes is such a wonderful way to ward your space in what I like to call a “generator” setting. It is one of those beautiful set-it-and-forget-it kinds of magick. As some of you may know, I’m an animist. I believe that everything has a spirit. Plants, rocks, gemstones, the chair you are sitting on right now, the phone or computer you are using to read this, every item carries a spirit of some kind. The level of sentience varies from object to object, but keeping that belief in mind, I like to ask my windchimes to become allies in protecting our home.

Here is the beauty of it: every time the wind blows and activates the chime, it alerts the spirit of the chime to patrol the property and help keep it warded. The wind itself becomes the trigger for the magick, which means the spell is constantly renewing itself without you having to lift a finger.

How to Work the Spell

You absolutely can build this into a full ritual if that feels right to you by casting a circle, calling quarters, inviting the spirit of the chime in, sitting with it in meditation, but I tend to keep mine a little simpler. Here is what I do:

  1. Invite the spirit in. I speak directly to the chime and invite its spirit to share the home and property with us.
  2. Offer a welcome. I give it a small drink of water (just a few drops is plenty) as a gesture of hospitality and welcome.
  3. Ask for alliance. I ask the spirit to become my ally in protecting the space.
  4. Give it a tour. I walk the chime around the property, either physically or in my mind’s eye, so it knows the boundaries of where it will be patrolling.
  5. Show it home. I show it where it will live, as in the hook, the porch, the spot it will call its own, and that is that!

Once the spell is set, the sun, rain, and wind do the rest of the work for you. Every gust that moves through the chime feeds and reactivates the ward, which means your lovely windchimes are now pulling double duty; beautiful to look at and listen to, while quietly keeping watch over your home.

It is such a simple practice, but I find a lot of magick in simplicity. Not every spell needs to be elaborate to be powerful. Sometimes the most effective magick is the kind that lives quietly in the everyday objects around us, doing its work in the background while we go about our lives.

If you try this spell, I would love to hear how it goes for you. Tell me below which spirit your windchime carries, or share a photo of where yours lives!

With love, Autumn 🌙
